Need someone else to take over project management?

BugSmash allows you to transfer project ownership to another eligible workspace member without affecting the project's comments, files, versions, or review history.

This is especially useful when a team member changes roles, leaves the company, or another teammate takes over managing the project.

How to Change the Project Owner

Steps →

  1. Open the project

  2. Select Share.

  3. Open the Project Owner section.

  4. Select the new Project Owner from the list of eligible workspace members.

  5. Confirm the change.

The selected member will immediately become the new Project Owner.

Project Ownership Rules

Workspace Owners & Workspace Admins

Workspace Owners and Workspace Admins can change the Project Owner at any time.

They can:

  • Transfer ownership to any eligible workspace member.

  • Assign themselves as the Project Owner.

  • Reassign ownership whenever required.

They always retain permission to change the Project Owner.

Current Project Owner

A Project Owner can transfer ownership to another eligible workspace member.

Once the ownership is transferred:

  • They immediately lose Project Owner permissions for that project.

  • They can no longer transfer ownership unless a Workspace Owner or Workspace Admin assigns the project back to them.

Who Can Become a Project Owner?

Project ownership can only be assigned to:

  • Workspace Owner

  • Workspace Admin

  • Workspace Members

The following users cannot become Project Owners:

  • Collaborators

  • Guest Reviewers

Note: If a collaborator creates a project, the project ownership is automatically assigned to the Workspace Owner.

Things to Know

  • Only one Project Owner can exist per project.

  • Workspace Owners and Workspace Admins can change the Project Owner at any time.

  • Collaborators and Guest Reviewers cannot become Project Owners.

  • If a collaborator creates a project, ownership is automatically assigned to the Workspace Owner.
